While each band member has considerable instrumental prowess, it is as a tightly calibrated ensemble that No Doubt scores most strongly. The slinky ska grooves that provide the foundation for many of No Doubt's songs helped keep the audience and the group moving. Another "Tragic Kingdom" gem, "Sunday Morning," featured some of Stefani's most stirring singing of the night, along with some tasteful slide guitar work by Dumont. Now 45 and a married mother of three, the perpetually sleek Stefani looked and sounded much the same as when No Doubt first soared to prominence with its third album, 1995's "Tragic Kingdom." The band's Rock in Rio performance included at least half a dozen songs from that album, including "Excuse Me Mr." and the poignant ballad "Don't Speak," both of which sounded fresh and vibrant. (On a more serious note, No Doubt's expert production manager and-on stage audio engineer, San Diego's Jon Schimke, deserves accolades of his own for helping achieve an aural clarity other festival acts would do well to emulate.) Her hair stylist, if not her hair itself, deserves some kind of Most Animated Supporting Role award. No matter how fast or often she spun, gyrated and darted to and fro across the stage, Stefani's hair seemed almost choreographed to somehow remain in sync with her movements and to frame and enhance them. So did Stefani's meticulously coiffed hair, which was mostly blonde and partly black, tied back on the left, but hung freely on the right side of her face. During "Hella Good," No Doubt's high-octane opening number, Stefani yelled: "Rock in Rio! I want to see every (expletive) person here jump up with me! Come on!" Thousands happily complied.

She repeatedly danced and pranced across the stage, imploring the audience to stay engaged with a series of commands. Until the band's 15th selection, "Just a Girl," when her vocal pitch began to waver in the chilly, early morning air, Stefani sang with poise and power throughout.
With guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal, powerhouse drummer Adrian Young and two supporting musicians providing a crisp musical foundation, Stefani commanded the stage like no other Rock in Rio performer Friday.
